Functional Safety

Duration: Three Days
Category: Upcoming Courses

Course Summary:

This comprehensive course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of Functional Safety as per the IEC-61511 standard, which sets the requirements for the functional safety of safety instrumented systems (SIS) in the process industry. Throughout the course, participants will learn

to identify, design, implement, operate, and maintain safety systems that comply with international standards, ensuring the protection of people, equipment, and the environment.

Course Benefits:

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

§  Gain a comprehensive understanding of Functional Safety concepts and the IEC-61511

standard.

§  Learn to effectively design, implement, and manage Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) in

compliance with international standards.

§  Acquire hands-on knowledge of risk assessment techniques, including HAZOP, LOPA, and

QRA.

§  Understand the importance of Safety Integrity Levels (SILs) and how to determine and

allocate them.

§  Develop practical skills in SIS operation, maintenance, and proof testing to ensure long-

term functionality and compliance.

§  Master Functional Safety Assessments (FSA) and their application throughout the safety

lifecycle.

§  Enhance safety culture and implement a robust Functional Safety Management System

(FSMS).

§  Professionals seeking to expand their knowledge of IEC-61511 compliance and Functional

Safety.

§  Individuals transitioning into roles that involve Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and risk

management.

Prerequisites:

This course does not have formal prerequisites. However, a basic understanding of process industry operations and control systems is beneficial. Familiarity with general safety concepts or standards such as HAZOP or LOPA will enhance the learning experience.

Instructor:

Carlos Javier Gasco Lallave is an expert in instrumentation, process control, and functional safety, with over 20 years of experience across the oil and gas, petrochemical, and energy sectors. He leads Becht's Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls Division, focusing on enhancing industrial process safety and efficiency. Carlos holds a Master’s in Industrial Physics with a specialization in Automation and Electronics and is a Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE) and member of the CFSE Advisory Board. His expertise includes Distributed Control Systems, Safety Instrumented Systems, and conducting Functional Safety Assessments, with a strong background in safety standards like IEC-61511/61508. An educator, Carlos teaches ISA’s “Expert in Functional Safety” course, training engineers worldwide in safety lifecycle management and industrial safety standards.
