D4294 Standard Test Method for Sulfur in Petroleum and Petroleum Products by Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry

ASTM D4294-16 Standard Test Method for Sulfur in Petroleum and Petroleum Products by Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry.
This test method covers the determination of total sulfur in petroleum and petroleum products that are single-phase and either liquid at ambient conditions, liquefiable with moderate heat, or soluble in hydrocarbon solvents. These materials can include diesel fuel, jet fuel, kerosene, other distillate oil, naphtha, residual oil, lubricating base oil, hydraulic oil, crude oil, unleaded gasoline, gasoline-ethanol blends, biodiesel and similar petroleum products.

  1. It will strengthen the knowledge base of trainees based on actual ASTM test procedures.
  2. With increased usage of automated lab equipment, focus for day to day work of lab personnel is on manufacturer information. This training will reinforce their knowledge to fully utilize automatic instruments.
  3. ASTM test method are created/ revised with lot of efforts from large number of participating labs and are very thorough. Thus, the training will provide advantages of collective work of many labs and the trainees will benefit from the finer details of the test methods.
  4. It will teach how to verify and select the test data by studying precision and bias of the ASTM test method

Mohammad Arab

In over 40 years total experience, Mr. Musa has been in laboratories and chemical industries. Currently, he is a Laboratory Consultant and previously QA/QC Laboratory Manager of Saudi Chevron Phillips Co. (S-Chem). Also, QA/QC Laboratory Manager of Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery. He has worked on staff training programs on ASTM Test Methods on Fuel, Petrochemicals and Polymers products. Initiated QA/QC and PTP Programs.

B.Sc. M.Sc. In Industrial Chemistry. ASTM member of D02, D16 and D20 committees, ACS member. Co-author of “Alkylation of toluene with methanol by using Shape Selective Zeolite Catalyst “Arabian Journal of Science and Technology vol 12 No1 p73-80

In over 39 years of total experience, Dr. Mohammad Arab has been associated with Refinery, Petrochemical and Polymer labs holding postions like Senior Chemist, Stall Chemist/ Chief Chemist and Head of Technical division. During this period he was responsible for analytical work, supervision and training of lab personnel. Currently he is working as a Consultant to a large scale QA/QC lab supporting Petrolchemical and Polymer plants. Dr. Arab has been involved in setting up of labs at such companies as Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery, Saudi Chevron Phillips, Jubail Chvron Phillips and Saudi Polymer Company. He has developped training programs to train new graduates (both Associate Degree holders and Bachelors Degree holders) to ensure they are equipped with appropriate technical knowledge and hands on practice to perform the required tests as well as experienced Technicians, Analysts and Chemists as refresher training.

Dr. Arab received his B.Sc.(Chemistry), M.Sc.(Organic Chemistry) and Ph.D. (Organic Chemistry- Characterization of Crude Petroleum) from University of Allahabad, India.
